Paris 1960 during the
Franco-Algerian War. The famous transsexuals were at Le Carousel and Chez Madame Arthur where April Ashley, Coccinelle, Bambi, Amanda Lear etc, were appearing. Obviously not all transsexuals are stage performers.
The Swedish photographer
Christer Strömholm (1918 - 2002) lived in Paris 1856 - 1962 and photographed many of the trans women who lived and worked around
Place Blanche. However we know very little about these women either before or after the short period in which they were photographed, and only in a few cases are they named.
